Community Volunteer Engagement at Queen's

Hybrid format:  Join in person or  Zoom:  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84783531312

Last summer Kenzie was hired to start surveying for a network where students could spend time volunteering in work that they are passionate about while making Kingston homes more sustainable. This summer Queen's Sustainability Volunteers (QSV) was launched and continues to gain a following as we educate our local community about the importance of retrofits. Retrofitting is critical now and will only become more necessary in the future as we continue to fight climate change and better our homes.

Mckenzie is a recent graduate from Queen's University where she majored in environmental science with a specialization in biology. She met Dr. Warren Mabee while she was working as the Deputy of Environmental Sustainability for the AMS where she collaborated with her Commissioner to form the environmental coalition at Queen's which still runs today. This group has been essential for environmental heads to collaborate on ideas, fundraisers and agendas and has substantially increased the outreach for everyone involved. They also created an event certificate that provides incentives to clubs that throw events within set eco-friendly parameters.

She now works as a biologist for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada where she collects data (specifically by catching cool fish) in hopes of improving the mapping for species at risk. She hopes to continue her research in fish and eventually venture off to the coast to pursue methods of bioremediation in developing countries.
