The Urgent Need at Dawn House

Maggie, Margaret to those who knew her before she married at eighteen, has lived in Kingston for most of her life.  Maggie hails from London, England, and her husband Hugh from Glasgow Scotland.  They are the original Jamie and Clare from Outlander.  They have four bairns and seven grandchildren.

Educated at Queen's and St. Lawrence College, she worked at St. Lawrence College for sixteen years in a variety of departments including the President's office, Business Department, English and Math Department, and held a number of different roles during her time there a secretary, technician, teacher, counsellor and training consultant.

Maggie has owned several local businesses over the years, and for the last twenty years has worked primarily in the non-profit field for two local charities as an Executive Director.  She has been the Executive Director at Dawn House for just over nine years.

Maggie started playing guitar, piano, and singing publically in Rock and Roll bands when she was 14 years old and over the past 40 years has played in a number of local bands with a number of popular local musicians.  More recently,in the ten years before the Pandemic, she was fortunate to have been able to play alongside her very talented husband and kids in their family Irish Band.

Maggie is passionate about the role that Dawn House plays in the local community and is committed to making a difference and helping to end womens' homelesness in Kingston.

Dawn House Services & Housing for Women’s Executive Director, will address us regarding Dawn House's new transitional housing project of 30 studios suites for homeless women with and without children. The City of Kingston has leased the building to  Dawn House and has undertaken the structural renovations required; however, it is up to Dawn House to furnish the entire building. Delays with construction materials have put them in a position where they have to accelerate their efforts to be operational in time for winter. Sadly, the increase of homeless women in our community has reached unprecedented levels, and therefore they are working hard to double their capacity to provide shelter, transitional services, and permanent affordable housing. Dawn House Women’s Shelter was founded in 1986 in response to a housing crisis in the City of Kingston. A diverse group of community individuals and organizations contributed to the setup and establishment as a non-profit, charitable organization that would provide a 24-hour crisis line and emergency shelter, support and resources for women over the age of 16, with or without children. Since its inception in 1986, there have been over 6,000 stays.
