Mi'Kmaw elder Albert Marshall spoke to the Rotary Club of Kingston on how Indigenous knowledge, concepts could merge with non-Indigenous ideas to build a stronger approach to create joint stewardship of our planet.
At the base of Marshall's philosophy is "Etuaptmumk" a Mi'kmaw word meaning "Two-Eyed Seeing". We often explain Etuaptmumk orTwo-Eyed Seeing as "Learning to see from one eye with the strengths of Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing, and from the other eye with the strengths of Western knowledge and ways of knowing." That way he added, "We learn to use both these eyes together, for the benefit of all."
Marshall then dwelt on the need to see that the impact on Climate change is Global, and that we must use our voices to take action. He also explored the concept of reconciliation, explaining such a concept must come from within each of us if it isa to succeed.
